Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley
Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay was encouraged by her aunt Denise when she was an infant. The aunt worked as a nurse who stayed overnight so that she could have the chance to learn about art theatre or literature. DuVernay loved the film West Side Story, which she brought to her. DuVernay was taught by her mother that art can be used to promote activism. DuVernay had her mother who was socially aware and taught her how to use the arts as a way to express herself. DuVernay lived in Compton throughout her youth, however she spent every summer in the company of her father's extended family in Lowndes County Alabama. DuVernay's father was able to recall seeing the Civil Rights Movement's historic march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge near the town of Selma Alabama. DuVernay used the summers she spent in Alabama to inspire her future film, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay completed Saint Joseph High School at Lakewood in California in the year 1990. Following graduation, DuVernay enrolled at the University of California Los Angeles and earned degrees both in English and African American study. As a student DuVernay began to consider producing for television journalism. DuVernay was an intern at CBS News at the time of the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembered being told to take a look at the junk of a jury member's home. Her tasks left her disappointed in journalism, so she decided to move towards the publicity industry. DuVernay got a job right after college as a new publicist at a studio. Her first venture was The DuVernay Agency, her public relations firm in 1999. In addition to PR, the company created several lifestyle networks such as Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful.
